Kanto Tactics items and recipes
Up to 3 items per Pokémon. Two components on the same Pokémon combine on their own into a completed item that keeps both components' stats and adds its own effect. Two identical items stack their full effect.

Magnet
The Magnet is not equipped: drag it onto a Pokémon and all its items go back to your bag. It is used up (unless the Pokémon held nothing) and takes a bag slot. Campaign: you start with one and get one more free at gym 3 and gym 6; the Dept. Store sometimes sells one. Battle Tower: one at the start and one per boss. PvP: one at the start and one at round 3-8.
Which items for which Pokémon
Basic attacks and physical abilities scale with Attack: Protein, Choice Band, Scope Lens. Special abilities, heals and shields scale with Sp. Atk: Calcium, Choice Specs, Quick Claw, Shell Bell. Life Orb helps both. Tanks want Leftovers, Rocky Helmet or Focus Sash. Each Pokémon's page says whether its ability at each star is Physical, Special or Mixed; Scope Lens crits only basic attacks.
"Best on" lists the Pokémon whose top 3-item set in our tests includes that item (each Pokémon as the carry of a full board, every combination of its class against the same field). See each Pokémon page for its full results.
Where items come from
Campaign: from wild Pokémon, Blue and Gym Leaders, Prof. Oak and the Celadon Dept. Store. PvP: loot from the AI rounds (2-8: 1 of 3 components plus 1 component; 3-8: the same; 4-8: 1 of 3 combined plus 1 component) and the Safari Zone draft.
